The conventional way of sending in a resume when applying for a job is no longer sufficient in these modern times. With the rapid growth of computer and internet technology there are now new means of letting companies know that you're available for hiring. Online resumes are now becoming more and more popular, and it is quite effective as well in getting your resumes noticed.

Numerous companies now do not accept paper resumes to be submitted to them, most especially large fortune 500 companies. These companies prefer submission through email or posting resumes on their websites. This is because new software is now put in place by their hiring departments to sort, categorize and prioritize incoming resumes, so that it would be easier for them to search for applicants with the specifications they want.

There are important factors though that you need to learn before attempting to post your resumes online, these are basic rules and formatting, just like the ones you apply to writing a resume on paper. Most of the rules for writing resumes still apply, like basic courtesy, formatting and cover pages.

There are three popular types of formats for an online resume. Printable and scan able text, HTML, and PDF format.

Printable and scan able versions are those you write with your word processing software, these are copies which are easily printed for manual submissions; this also includes plain text which doesn't have much design or formatting, and can be easily copied and pasted on websites and forms.

HTML format resumes are resumes specifically encoded for web pages and online postings. Most of these are automatically generated by job sites and other websites.

PDF formats are documents, or resumes in our case, that are written using the Adobe PDF program, these types of documents provide more area for personalization and formatting and can only be edited using Abode software. This type of format can be describes as pictures of text, which has the advantage of retaining the format and the look when viewed from different computers.

Make sure to in always include a cover letter when submitted your resume online. Try to write it in a way that will encourage the reader to read your full resume. Include an introduction, what you offer or the position you want to apply for, just make sure that it is attractive and encouraging.

For responses to online advertisements, you need to follow the company's instructions and specifications to the letter when sending your resume online. If they ask you to place a job code or place specific information, then do so. This shows your competence and your ability to follow instructions.

Format your email properly and make sure that it is readable across different platforms and softwares, this can be achieved by sticking with plain text formatting, proper carriage returns or spacing, text based highlights and shorter text lines. This is important because a badly formatted and unreadable email would most likely be deleted.

Post the content of your resume on the body of an email message, try to avoid attaching it to the email. In today's world of rampant viruses and spamming, most hiring managers don't really open attachments anymore. So it is better if you place it on the body of the email so that your resume can be seen right away when the email is opened.

Last but definitely not the least is proofread and proofread again. Make sure your resume does not contain any errors, misspellings and grammatical errors. Read your online resume over and over again and let someone read it too.
