5 Tips on How to Achieve Work - Life Balance

One of the reasons that it is so difficult for many people to achieve work-life balance is because we tend to aim our priorities at what society tells us we should value the most. For instance, how are you supposed to learn how to achieve work-life balance when your boss tells you extra effort will lead to a promotion and society tells us that a promotion will lead to a bigger house? When we focus on what society's priorities are rather than what we believe our priorities are, we a far from achieving work-life balance.

Tip 1: Listen to your own sense of priorities in order to achieve work-life balance. What you believe is most important right now is where you are more likely to put your energy. If you believe that being home for dinner every night is more important than the possibility of a promotion, then it doesn't matter what society thinks. Develop an idea of which five things you would eliminate from your life if you had to carve your life down to only five elements. Then work the list backwards until you are only permitted to have one thing in your life and you will have the blueprint for achieving work-life balance.

Tip 2: Don't mix up your priorities once you have them figured out. You will not have any greater chance of learning how to achieve work-life balance if your head is still at work when you're home and your heart is at home when you're at work. Give each area of your life 100% of you simply by being present and the quality of every segment of your life will dramatically improve.

Tip 3: In order to achieve work-life balance you need to protect your time away from work. Giving away your time to countless emails and cell phone messages takes away from your sense of balance. Let your boss know that you won't be able to check your email at home one night, and then get into the habit of staying away from work emails when you're home. Turn the cell phone off in order to achieve work-life balance and freedom from the electronic communication tools that have strapped us to the office.

Tip 4: Identify your time wasting behavior on your way to achieving work-life balance. While everyone needs down time, too much television isn't helping you develop a quality home life. Hours of gaming eats away your time at home. Before you know it you have spent a week of nights lost in front of electronic entertainment rather than connecting with your kids, your partner, or even the family dog. Get up and play with the family while you're home and eliminate the time wasting behavior in order to learn how to achieve work-life balance.

Tip 5: In order to achieve work-life balance you have to recognize your own value and importance when it comes to exercising your right to determine how you want to spend your time. Listening to your own needs is not a selfish or thoughtless way to live. It is nurturing and helps you achieve work-life balance as well as balance within your personal life.
